Hawk-Eyes Red Kite Green 9H fledged from a huge Monterey Pine tree at a nest site in Co. Down in late July 2024. It had one sibling (Green 9J), which wasn’t fitted with a satellite transmitter.

In mid-August Green 9H started exploring into Co. Armagh and south Co. Antrim and then in late August he took off! After a spell of 20 days east of Dublin Green 9H made a break for the southern coast of Ireland, reaching Dungarvan in Co Waterford on 1st October.
On the evening of the 2nd October he reached Mizen Head and roosted here before heading northwards on the 3rd October. We know red kites don’t like crossing large bodies of water but it certainly looks like this one was trying to find a way off the island! He is currently in the Irish mid-lands but will he return to the Mournes any time soon???
